Mortar and Pestle

Previously, carpenters used to prepare mortar from wood. It was used to grind spices like chili. More spices were ground to make masalas. The chili or turmeric was placed in the round portion and crushed with the wooden stick above it. This wooden stick had a mallet-like shape.
